Why support after rape is so powerful and healing: for me finding support after my rape via my church community helped me heal especially with letting myself off the hook and realizing I wasn’t at fault because after my rape I struggled with unforgiveness towards myself for years, having honest support around me freed me and changed my views towards myself! Never underestimate what support can do!

After sexual assault, survivors can sometimes turn the anger inward and ask themselves questions like “Why didn’t I prevent it?”, “Did I do something wrong?”, or “Could I have made different choices?” Even when they intellectually know they were victimized, emotionally accepting that can take much longer.
Having people around you who consistently communicate “This was not your fault,” “We believe you,” “You didn’t deserve this,” and “You don’t have to carry this alone” can gradually challenge that self-blame.
And support doesn’t necessarily erase what happened—it can change the meaning you attach to yourself afterward. Instead of seeing yourself through the lens of what was done to you, you can begin seeing yourself as someone who survived something that was never your responsibility.
Sometimes healing begins when someone finally stops asking, “What’s wrong with me?” and starts understanding, “Nothing about what happened to me made me guilty.”
