Why I Relate to Quasimodo as an Author

  • Posted on January 16, 2026

When most people think of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, they picture Quasimodo as the lonely, deformed bell-ringer, hidden away in the cathedral towers of Paris. But to me, he represents something much deeper—the life of a writer.

Quasimodo is judged by the world for his appearance, misunderstood, and often overlooked. As authors, we can relate to this. Our work, our ideas, and even our voices are sometimes judged before they are understood. People may see the surface—our writing style, the genre we choose, the topics we tackle—without recognizing the depth and heart behind it.

Like Quasimodo, authors often live in a world of isolation. We spend countless hours with our thoughts, wrestling with ideas and characters that the world may never notice. Yet it is in this solitude that creativity blooms, and where our most honest, passionate work comes to life.

But there’s also a shared resilience. Quasimodo’s devotion, courage, and empathy shine through despite his isolation. As writers, we too persist—crafting stories, sharing truths, and giving voice to experiences that might otherwise be ignored. There’s power in being misunderstood if it means staying true to your vision.

Ultimately, Quasimodo reminds me that what matters isn’t how the world sees you—it’s the depth of your inner life and the courage to create. As authors, our greatest strength is often found in what is unseen, unfazed by judgment, and fully committed to the story only we can tell.
