When the Church Prefers “Neat” Testimonies

  • Posted on April 4, 2026

It’s something I’ve noticed: the church often loves neat, clean, predictable testimonies. The kind that fit a formula: “I struggled with X, I prayed, God delivered me, and now I’m living a new life.” Getting free from drugs or alcohol often falls into this category. Don’t get me wrong—God absolutely can and does deliver people from addiction—but the reality is, freedom in those areas often comes with external support. Rehab programs, accountability groups, and structured plans all play a role. It’s tangible. It’s understandable. And it’s easy for people to celebrate.

But then there’s healing from trauma—like rape. There’s no step-by-step checklist. There’s no rehab program or support group that can miraculously erase the pain. True healing from sexual trauma is messy, deeply personal, and entirely in God’s hands. It’s not predictable. It’s not “formulaic.” And that’s what makes testimonies like mine so powerful.

I overcame rape—not because of a program, not because of a plan, but because of God alone. That’s the kind of story that challenges the “neat” narrative. It shows people that God’s work doesn’t always look the way we expect. It can be raw. It can be ongoing. But it can also be transformational.

To those who feel broken in ways that can’t be solved by routine or formula: know this—God’s power is not limited to predictable outcomes. He can heal what no one else can, restore what seems impossible, and bring life where there’s only pain. And sometimes, that’s the most powerful testimony of all.
