When Focus Isn’t the Formula

  • Posted on March 5, 2026

This year my church declared the “word of the year” as fierce focus.

And listen — I get it.

Focus matters. Discipline matters. Distractions can absolutely delay purpose. Being intentional about your life is wise. There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to tighten up, lock in, and be serious about what God has placed in their hands.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to quietly wrestle with something:

What happens when you’re focused… and nothing happens?

What happens when you pray consistently, show up faithfully, work diligently, stay out of trouble, keep your heart right — and still see no visible shift?

Because real life has taught me this:

  • Some focused people still wait.
  • Some disciplined people still struggle.
  • Some faithful people still suffer.
  • And some unfocused people prosper effortlessly.

So what do we do with that?

Sometimes church messages, even when well-intended, can unintentionally create pressure. If we’re not careful, we can internalize the idea that breakthrough is a reward for performance. That if nothing is moving, it must mean we’re not focused enough. Not obedient enough. Not disciplined enough.

But God is not a vending machine.

His goodness is not transactional.

Yes, focus positions you.
Yes, discipline builds character.
Yes, stewardship matters.

But blessing is not earned like a paycheck.

If it were, none of us would qualify.

God blesses because He is good — not because we executed the year perfectly. His grace doesn’t operate on a productivity chart. His mercy isn’t activated by flawless focus.

And honestly? That’s freeing.

Because life is layered. Timing is mysterious. Growth is often invisible. And sometimes what feels like “nothing happening” is actually deep, internal preparation.

I’m not dismissing focus.

I’m just refusing to turn it into a formula.

Faith matures when we realize that God’s sovereignty is bigger than our strategy. That His plans are not limited by our mistakes — or guaranteed by our precision.

Focused or unfocused, He is still God.
Disciplined or messy, He is still good.
Waiting or thriving, He is still faithful.

Maybe the real breakthrough isn’t fierce focus.

Maybe it’s fierce trust.
