The Hidden Strengths of Growing Up in a Single-Parent Home

  • Posted on February 18, 2026

It’s funny how the church—and society in general—often stigmatizes single-parent households. The messaging can be subtle or overt: “Kids need two parents to succeed” or “This isn’t ideal for a child’s future.” Yet, if you look closer, many people who grew up in single-parent homes are thriving in ways that defy those assumptions.

Growing up with one parent often requires developing resilience, independence, and problem-solving skills at an early age. Children in these homes frequently take on responsibilities sooner, learn to navigate complex emotions, and adapt to change—skills that become invaluable in adulthood.

Meanwhile, kids from two-parent homes, while certainly not disadvantaged, may not have the same push to cultivate self-reliance or grit, simply because some challenges are buffered. This doesn’t mean one setup is “better” than the other, but it does reveal that success isn’t dictated by the number of parents in a home—it’s shaped by determination, mindset, and the lessons learned along the way.

So the next time you hear the judgment or stigma around single-parent households, remember this: the experiences that might seem like “struggles” are often the very experiences that produce strength, creativity, and drive. Life doesn’t care about your starting point—it’s what you do with it that counts.
