Many Christian children grow up carrying invisible scars from their own homes—wounds their parents never intended to inflict. Spiritual abuse doesn’t always come from malice. Sometimes it comes from fear, misunderstanding, or simply doing what they thought was “godly.”

But the impact is real. Children raised to believe that any small mistake could cost them their salvation, or that normal childhood curiosity is sinful, grow up carrying shame instead of faith. Hanging out with friends, watching a movie, or making a simple mistake can feel like a moral crime. Expectations that a child could live up to adult spiritual standards often leave them feeling inadequate, guilty, and broken, no matter how hard they try.

The cruel truth is this: these rules weren’t always biblical, and the burdens placed on young shoulders were far heavier than God ever intended. And yet, many children never learned the difference between loving God and fear of punishment, between faith and perfectionism.

Spiritual abuse doesn’t require evil intent. It only requires power misapplied, fear disguised as piety, and innocence caught in the crossfire.
