You Can’t Fire an Author: A Reflection on Growth, Ownership, and Starting Again

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about being an author is this simple truth: you can’t be fired from your calling.

In traditional jobs, people can lose positions. One mistake, one setback, or one season of falling short can lead to being let go — even in careers that required years of education and hard work. But authorship works differently. As an author, if I fall short, I don’t lose my role. I grow, I learn, and I write again.

That realization is freeing.

Being an author means ownership. The work belongs to me. The lessons belong to me. If a book doesn’t reach people the way I hoped, it doesn’t end my journey. It simply means I have room to revise, expand, and deepen my message. I can release a second edition, add new insight, include more honesty, or write another book entirely. Growth isn’t a failure — it’s part of the process.

What’s powerful is that mistakes don’t disqualify an author. They often become material. The chapters I once struggled to write may later become the strongest parts of my testimony. The things I misunderstood at one point in life can become wisdom I share later. Readers don’t just connect with perfection — they connect with progress.

Authorship is also a long game. Books can continue speaking long after they’re written. Each new work builds on the last, and every season of life gives deeper perspective. The voice of an author matures over time, and that evolution is visible to anyone who reads the journey from beginning to end.

Most importantly, authors don’t wait for permission to continue. There’s no gatekeeper deciding whether I’m allowed another chance. I decide when to write again. I decide when to revise. I decide when to tell the story differently because I’ve grown.

That’s the beauty of it.

You can’t fire an author — because authorship isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being willing to keep showing up, keep learning, and keep telling the truth as you grow.

And maybe that’s the real success: not never falling short, but refusing to stop writing anyway.
