Marriage Isn’t for Everyone: Why Choice Matters

Society often insists that a pregnancy must lead to marriage. But what if two young people are pushed into a marriage they don’t truly want? The result is often resentment, stress, and a relationship built on obligation rather than love.

Marriage should be about choice, connection, and mutual respect—not pressure or expectation. When young couples are forced to marry because of a pregnancy, they risk entering a life together without genuine understanding or emotional readiness. The love that’s supposed to be the foundation of their union can quickly turn into frustration or even animosity.

On the other hand, choosing to co-parent without marriage can allow for a more authentic bond. Without the weight of societal expectations, both parents can focus on building a relationship rooted in respect, communication, and shared purpose. Love becomes a choice, not a requirement. They can support each other, nurture their child, and perhaps even develop a deeper, more genuine connection than if they had been forced into marriage.

Marriage isn’t the ultimate measure of love or responsibility. Sometimes, the healthiest path is to embrace choice—loving and supporting each other because you want to, not because you’re obligated to.
