Rethinking “Timing” in Church Narratives About Women

  • Posted on February 18, 2026

It’s common in church settings to hear stories about women who married later in life or had children later than expected — sometimes pastors or speakers will highlight their own journeys, like marrying at 36 or having a child at 40. On the surface, it’s meant to be honest and even inspiring. But there’s an unspoken message in how it’s framed: after a certain age, it can feel like love, marriage, and motherhood are “off the table.”

This framing can unintentionally make women feel like they’re under a curse or that God’s timing is somehow “too late.” But the truth is, life doesn’t follow a set timeline, and neither does God’s plan. History and scripture are full of examples that defy conventional timing. Take Sarah in the Bible — she had a child at 90 years old! That’s a powerful reminder that God’s plans operate on a timeline beyond human understanding.

The unintended consequence of these church narratives is that they can make women feel limited or anxious about their age. It’s not about judging someone for marrying or having children “later,” but about challenging the idea that later timing is a setback. God’s timing isn’t a curse — it’s a mystery, and often, a blessing that aligns with a bigger plan.

Women should hear messages that affirm this truth: love, marriage, and children can come at any age, and there’s no deadline set by God on your life’s joys and milestones. And let’s always remember, for women who never marry, never have children, or have lost children, these narratives can feel isolating or painful. It can make them feel overlooked or even that God’s plan somehow “passed them by.” Often times women’s ministries are biased, same messaging, same narrative, same type of woman.
