Prayer, Enabling, and “Blocked” Prayers

  • Posted on March 15, 2026

In many church spaces, when prayers seem unanswered, the immediate assumption is often unforgiveness. While unforgiveness can certainly affect a person spiritually, it’s not the only factor that may influence outcomes.

Sometimes the issue isn’t spiritual blockage—it’s misalignment between the prayer and the person’s actions.

For example, someone may pray daily for a financial breakthrough, yet refuse to work, save, budget, or invest. Prayer is powerful, but it doesn’t replace wisdom or responsibility. Faith and stewardship are meant to work together.

Even when God blesses someone financially regardless of their efforts, the responsibility still remains: what will they do with the blessing once it comes? Without wisdom or discipline, financial breakthroughs can disappear just as quickly as they arrive.

Another concern is enabling. Sometimes people constantly pray for someone’s financial situation while also enabling unhealthy habits. Giving money repeatedly without encouraging accountability or financial wisdom can keep someone stuck rather than helping them grow.

Prayer should not become a substitute for personal responsibility. True support includes:

  • Encouraging wise financial decisions
  • Encouraging work and personal effort
  • Teaching stewardship and accountability
  • Avoiding patterns of enabling dependency

Prayer and action were never meant to compete with each other—they are meant to work together. Faith without wisdom can lead to cycles of frustration, while faith paired with responsibility creates room for sustainable breakthrough.

Sometimes the answer to prayer isn’t just waiting for a miracle; sometimes it’s aligning our actions with what we’re asking God to do. Matthew 25:21King James Version

21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
