Pam Grier Relates to Me as an Author

When people think of Pam Grier, they think of Coffy, Foxy Brown, and a fearless presence on the big screen. But for me, she’s more than an icon—she’s a kind of literary soulmate. Not because she writes books, but because she embodies the same unapologetic, raw, and unfiltered energy that drives my work as an author.
Pam Grier never shrank herself to fit someone else’s mold. She didn’t wait for permission to exist fully in her power, even when Hollywood tried to box her into narrow roles. That’s exactly how I feel when I write. Every page I put out into the world is me, raw and unapologetic. I don’t filter my truth to make it more digestible. I refuse to shrink.
Her characters break stereotypes, and so do I—just with words. She showed that Black women could be bold, magnetic, and fully in control of their story. As an author, I do the same on the page: claiming space, telling truths that others might shy away from, and creating room for readers to feel empowered by our shared stories.
Pam Grier commands attention effortlessly. On-screen, her energy is magnetic. On the page, I strive for that same pull. I want readers to feel my presence, my intensity, my humor, my intellect. I want my writing to demand recognition, not quietly ask for it.
Being an author in this way is more than storytelling—it’s reclaiming space, celebrating power, and refusing to apologize for existing fully. Pam Grier taught me that fearlessness isn’t just an act—it’s a lifestyle. And in my writing, I live it every day.
If Pam Grier can disrupt Hollywood’s narrow ideas of who a leading woman can be, I can disrupt literary spaces with my own unapologetic truth. And that’s exactly what I intend to do.
