Not Every Encounter With God Is Loud

Many people think an encounter with God has to be dramatic, emotional, public, and drawn out for hours. But that’s not always how God moves.
In early September 2023, I was struggling with suicidal thoughts. It was a very heavy and painful time in my life. There was no church service happening, no altar call, no crowd of people praying over me.
I was simply alone in my bedroom.
Then something quiet but powerful happened. I felt the presence of God. There was no dramatic scene, no shouting, no long process. It didn’t take hours. It happened quickly and peacefully.
In that moment, I just knew I was free.
That was it.
Sometimes people expect God to show up in big public ways. At conferences, services, and events that can last for hours, there can be pressure to have some kind of visible or emotional experience. But the truth is, God doesn’t need a stage, a microphone, or a long program to change someone’s life.
God can meet you anywhere.
He can meet you in your bedroom, in your car, on a walk, or in the middle of an ordinary moment. His presence isn’t limited to dramatic environments.
Recently I attended a women’s conference at church that was supposed to end at 2pm but went on for hours. While events like that can be meaningful for some people, they also made me reflect on something important: my own breakthrough didn’t happen in a long service or dramatic setting.
It happened quietly.
Sometimes the most powerful moments with God are the ones that happen when no one else is watching.
Your encounter with God doesn’t have to look like someone else’s. It doesn’t have to be loud, emotional, or public to be real. If God meets you in a quiet moment and sets you free, that moment is just as powerful as anything that happens on a stage.
God isn’t limited by human expectations of what a “real” encounter should look like.
Sometimes freedom comes in the quiet.
