Not “Churchy” Enough — Or Just Real?
- Posted on April 4, 2026
I’ve wrestled with this thought:
What if my testimony doesn’t sound “holy” enough?
Not polished enough.
Not churchy enough.
Not wrapped in the kind of language people expect when you talk about God.
But then I realized something that changed everything—
God does not limit Himself to religious presentation.
We do that.
God speaks in ways that reach people.
And sometimes… that doesn’t look traditional at all.
There was a time in my life when I was battling suicidal thoughts.
It wasn’t a sermon that pulled me out of that moment.
It wasn’t someone laying hands on me.
It was a song.
And not even a gospel song.
But the lyrics—talking about having a perfect day, about things going right—hit something deep in me. In a moment where everything felt heavy, those words gave me a glimpse of hope. And that hope mattered.
That moment mattered.
God used something unexpected to reach me in a place where I was struggling to stay.
And that wasn’t the only time.
There were moments where I would come across random words—through a dictionary, through everyday life—and they would stand out to me:
Victory.
Courage.
Strength.
To someone else, just words.
To me, they were reminders. Anchors. Lifelines.
So now I ask—
Who says God can only speak one way?
We’ve created this idea that testimonies have to sound a certain way to be valid. Clean. Structured. Scripture-filled. Easy to follow. Easy to celebrate.
But real life healing?
It’s not always neat like that.
Sometimes it’s messy.
Sometimes it’s quiet.
Sometimes it doesn’t even look “spiritual” on the outside.
But it’s real.
And I think that’s what makes people uncomfortable.
Because raw truth doesn’t always fit inside religious expectations.
But here’s what I know—
If something gave you hope when you were losing it…
If something helped you hold on when you felt like letting go…
If something reminded you that your life still had value…
That matters.
Whether it came through a sermon, a song, a conversation, or a single word—you don’t get to erase the impact just because it didn’t come in a traditional form.
God is not confined to a stage.
He’s not confined to a building.
And He’s definitely not confined to sounding “churchy.”
He meets people in real places.
In real pain.
In real moments.
And sometimes the most powerful testimonies aren’t the ones that sound the most polished—
They’re the ones that sound the most honest.
So no, my story may not sound the way some people expect.
But it’s real.
It’s honest.
And it reached me when I needed it the most.
And if it can reach someone else too—
Then it’s more than enough.
