Humility in the World vs. the Church ⛪️

  • Posted on March 16, 2026

Have you ever noticed how humility plays out differently in the world compared to the church? Think about a restaurant, for example. The staff and leaders there—managers, chefs, servers—don’t demand respect or reverence. They aren’t worried about titles or appearances. Their focus is simple: serving the guests, making sure everyone is comfortable, and ensuring the experience is pleasant. Humility is built into their actions. People respect them naturally because they see care and service in motion.

Now, compare that to some church settings. Elders and leaders often expect honor, reverence, and special treatment simply because of their position. Sometimes the focus shifts from serving the congregation to being seen as important. The contrast is striking. In restaurants, humility earns respect; in some churches, authority demands it.

True leadership—whether in a restaurant, a home, or a church—shines when it lifts others without demanding recognition. Serving quietly, prioritizing the well-being of others, and leading by example is the kind of humility that inspires genuine admiration.

Maybe the lesson here is simple: humility isn’t about titles, rituals, or seating arrangements. It’s about how we serve, the hearts we touch, and the respect we earn through action rather than demand.
