Healing from Trauma Is Like Healing from Illness

  • Posted on April 3, 2026

Healing from rape is often described as a long, difficult journey—and rightly so. But one way to understand it is by comparing it to healing from a physical illness, like a stomach virus. When your body is sick, you can’t just ignore the symptoms and expect to get better. If your stomach needs to purge, you have to let it happen. It’s not comfortable, it’s not pretty, but it’s necessary for recovery.

Emotional healing works in much the same way. After trauma, your mind and body need to process the pain, confusion, fear, anger, and grief. Suppressing these feelings may seem easier, but it only prolongs the suffering. Just like a virus that lingers when left unchecked, unresolved trauma can manifest in unexpected ways—anxiety, depression, flashbacks, or even physical symptoms.

Allowing yourself to feel fully, to cry, to express anger, or to seek support, is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you are actively purging the harm done to you, creating space for restoration and strength. Healing may be messy, uncomfortable, and unpredictable—but it is also transformative.

The process is neither linear nor quick, but each step you take in facing your trauma is a step toward reclaiming your body, your mind, and your life. Just as your body fights to rid itself of a virus, your inner self is fighting to reclaim peace, balance, and freedom.

Take note: the “ugly” parts of healing are necessary. They are part of the cure.
