Forgiveness is often taught as if it is the key that unlocks God’s voice, as though bitterness somehow silences Him. But that is not entirely true. God is not limited by our emotional state. He meets people where they are—even in anger, grief, and bitterness. A bitter heart does not make God distant or unwilling to speak. In fact, many times it is in those very moments of pain that He draws near the most.

However, while God can speak to anyone, He does not override free will. It is up to the individual to receive what He is saying. Bitterness can make a person more guarded, less trusting, and slower to accept truth, not because God has stopped speaking, but because the heart may struggle to hear clearly.

Forgiveness, then, is not about earning access to God or unlocking His voice. It is about freeing the heart. It softens what pain has hardened and removes internal barriers that distort understanding. God is always speaking—but forgiveness helps us recognize His voice with greater clarity and respond to it with openness.

Bitterness does not block God from reaching you, but it can influence how you perceive and respond to Him. And even in that, God is patient—willing to walk with you through the process, speaking not just beyond your pain, but often directly into it.
