Being Myself: Why Writing Sets Me Free

  • Posted on January 24, 2026

I’ve tried not being my true self before, and it wasn’t fun — in fact, it depressed me. Even when I explored certain career paths in the past, I realized I couldn’t truly be myself in those fields.

Take fashion design, for example. Creativity exists, yes, but it comes with limits. You have to follow trends, create what “looks good,” and appeal to other people’s standards — otherwise, your work is meaningless. Cosmetology is similar: you must adhere to hair trends, client expectations, and safety procedures. In both fields, you’re essentially boxed in, always trying to fit others’ needs. 📦

Writing, on the other hand, is different. There are no boxes, no trends, no rules about what I can or cannot create. I don’t have to follow anyone’s agenda or compromise my voice. I can fully be myself — and my work is meaningful exactly as it is.

As a writer, I can explore, experiment, and express my truth without limits. I can be authentic, unapologetic, and free. Writing isn’t just my career; it’s my space to breathe, my playground, and my sanctuary.

Being true to myself isn’t just a choice — it’s the only way I thrive. And through writing, I’ve found a way to live fully, creatively, and without compromise. With both fashion and hair, you can become a slave to people’s opinions, if your outfit isn’t up to par and people criticize you, you change the outfit and sometimes repeatedly, same with hair, if your hair doesn’t look good, you change it over and over, until it looks good and fits what’s considered “beautiful” but writing is a done deal, after it’s done there’s no trying to make it look a certain way or make it look “beautiful” writing can’t be labeled like hair and clothes can! Wow! Bondage isn’t only limited to sin, many times bondage is also caring what others thinks, neglecting our own needs and overly trying to fill the needs of others, both hair and fashion careers would’ve probably been draining emotionally, writing is easy because i’m

not drained by others demands! As a fashion designer/cosmetologist, I would have had to make/do exactly what a client asked for or otherwise I’d had not gotten paid, with writing, I will get paid regardless of meeting someone else’s needs! Fashion and cosmetology is all about performing for others, writing is not! Writing is simply truth! Writing holds a lesson , all may not receive it, but the right ones will! Fashion and cosmetology can be vain/strictly about looks, writing isn’t vain or only about looks! And ironically I am not a vain person at all! Wow! Fashion and cosmetology are about covering flaws, writing is about exposing em, especially in my book 📕 wow!
