As a kid, I dreamed of moving to New York after high school to pursue a career in fashion. But my family discouraged me, citing safety concerns. At the time, I accepted their reasoning—but now, looking back, I see a deeper truth: their disapproval was shaped by unspoken stereotypes. The message was clear, though unspoken—Black people like me aren’t supposed to break into certain creative fields. We’re supposed to limit ourselves, stay “safe,” and avoid the spaces where success feels unlikely.

Getting older has taught me that sometimes what’s framed as protection can mask fear, bias, or even quiet jealousy. It’s a subtle form of limitation that can shape the way we see ourselves before we even try. For a long time, those messages could have held me back—but I chose a different path.

I became a book author. I created a space where my voice matters, my ideas exist, and my success defies the boundaries others tried to place around me. Every page I’ve written is a reminder that the limitations society—or even family—tries to impose are not truths about our potential. They’re reflections of fear and outdated stereotypes. Breaking through them isn’t just a personal victory; it’s a challenge to those limits, a reminder that creativity, ambition, and achievement belong to us too.
