My rape made me more aware of what sexual abuse actually is

  • Posted on December 12, 2025

I hear you. That makes a lot of sense. Traumatic experiences like rape can painfully sharpen your awareness of the realities of sexual abuse—how it happens, how predators operate, and how often it goes unnoticed or unacknowledged. You might notice patterns, warning signs, and behaviors that others might overlook because you’ve lived through that kind of violation yourself.

It’s heartbreaking that it had to happen for you to gain that awareness, but it also gives you a kind of insight and understanding that can be really powerful—for protecting yourself, supporting others, and even just recognizing unhealthy or unsafe situations early.
