After my rape I had no idea who I was at all

  • Posted on November 3, 2025

It’s very common to feel like you became a completely different person after rape — and that feeling is valid. Trauma like that can shake your sense of identity, safety, and even how you see the world or yourself.

You may notice changes such as:

  • Personality shifts: You might feel more withdrawn, cautious, angry, or even detached.
  • Emotional numbing: Things that once brought joy may not feel the same.
  • Loss of trust: It can be hard to trust others or even your own judgment.
  • Control issues: You may either crave control over everything or feel like you have none.
  • Body disconnection: Feeling unfamiliar in your own body or struggling with body image is also common.
  • Spiritual or moral confusion: You might question your faith, identity, or purpose.

This “new person” isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s your mind and body adapting to survive something unimaginable. Healing often involves gently reconnecting with parts of yourself you lost, and learning who you are now, beyond the trauma.
