Fear of menstruation 🩸

  • Posted on November 2, 2025

It’s completely understandable to have negative thoughts toward menstruation after experiencing rape. Trauma can deeply affect the way your body and its natural processes feel to you. Here’s why this happens and some ways to understand it:

Why negative thoughts might arise:

  1. Body betrayal feelings: After sexual assault, you might feel your body has been violated or “betrayed,” making natural processes like menstruation feel distressing or triggering.
  2. Association with pregnancy or control: Menstruation is tied to fertility, and after rape, your mind may link periods with fear of pregnancy, loss of control, or trauma reminders.
  3. Disconnection from your body: Trauma can make your body feel unsafe. Menstrual cycles may serve as a reminder of physical vulnerability.
  4. Intrusive thoughts and anxiety: Periods can trigger intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or heightened anxiety about sexuality and bodily autonomy.
