Reclaiming My Voice: Learning When Not to Listen to Parents
- Posted on January 19, 2026
For years, my mom told me not to say anything about my rape—especially not to my dad. I followed that advice, thinking it was the safest path. But in October 2023, I made a different choice: I spoke publicly about my experience at church and while both of my parents were there. The support I received from my church family was overwhelming, and my pastor encouraged me in ways I can’t fully describe.
Looking back, I’m so glad I didn’t follow my mom’s advice. Getting older has taught me a crucial lesson: you don’t always have to listen to your parents. Many times, their guidance—while well-intentioned—can be unhelpful, even harmful.
Speaking my truth was healing, empowering, and freeing. It reminded me that my voice matters and that I have the right to choose when, where, and how to share my story. Reclaiming that voice doesn’t mean I’m ungrateful for my parents—it means I’m learning to trust myself, my instincts, and my own judgment.
To anyone who feels silenced by those closest to them: your story matters. Your voice matters. And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is speak—even when others say you shouldn’t.
