When Faith Turns Into a Cage
- Posted on January 18, 2026
Religion, at its best, can guide. But at its worst, it can police. It can shrink you. It can turn curiosity into rebellion and questions into sin.
I noticed how often God’s name was used to justify:
- Shame instead of healing
- Silence instead of truth
- Obedience instead of understanding
And I started to wonder—Would a loving God really need this much fear to be followed?
Choosing Relationship Over Rules
What I wanted wasn’t distance from God. It was closeness without permission slips.
I wanted to pray without a script.
To believe without a threat.
To grow without being told I was “falling away.”
So I kept the faith and dropped the framework that said God only lives inside certain buildings, books, or leaders.
God Beyond the Institution
I found God in quiet moments.
In nature.
In honesty.
In love that doesn’t come with conditions.
I found a spirituality that doesn’t demand perfection—just presence.
This Isn’t Rebellion. It’s Reclamation.
Leaving religious control isn’t about becoming lost. For me, it was about becoming found.
Found in my own voice.
Found in my own conscience.
Found in a God who doesn’t need to be defended by fear or enforced by people.
My Faith, My Terms
I still believe.
I still pray.
I still seek God.
I just don’t believe God needs a system of control to be real.
Sometimes, walking away from religion isn’t walking away from God.
Sometimes, it’s walking toward Him—without the middlemen. Matthew 11:28-30The Message
28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
